If You'll Be Left Front...

Many years ago, I was at B.B. King’s Blues Club in Memphis. I don’t remember the band or any of their songs, but I remember exactly what they said at the end of their set:

If you’ll be left front, we’ll be right back.”

It was a clever throwaway line from tired musicians — but it also flipped a familiar radio phrase on its head. In radio, ‘We’ll be right back’ or ‘After the break’ is common language. It may describe what’s happening operationally, but it’s not how listeners experience your station.

Listeners don’t perceive you as leaving and returning. They hear one continuous flow: music, breaks, promos, underwriting, all of it.

When a host says ‘we’ll be right back,’ they’re unintentionally signaling that nothing important is happening for the next minute or two — the opposite of what you want. Like many habits in radio, this phrasing persists simply because it’s always been done that way.

But it’s an opportunity. With a small shift in perspective, that moment can become a chance to deliver something more engaging, more intentional, and more listener‑focused.
